The leather, original, on the corners was worn, now restored; spine worn on hinges and re-colored; new gilt titles on 3 red skivers; cloth re-colored. All pages somewhat yellowed; mostly free from foxing except for the plates which are all considerably foxed as are the facing pages. Edges speckled but top edge faded. The present eps are rather brittle – on request they can be replaced by NEW marbled end-papers. 1 volume in 3 parts. cxiii plus viii Author’s Apology in verse plus 572 pages, 2nd part starts at page 217, 3rd part starts at page 421. Frontispiece portrait, engraved title page with a vignette and tissue guard , 8 steel engraved plates, believed complete but no list and no signs of anything missing and no tissue guards. Various engravers . A hand-colored folding map, Plan of the Road from the City of Destruction to the Celestial City, engraved especially for Virtue’s Elegant Edition of Pilgrims Progress. Please ask for a list of plates. A rare if not unique production carefully restored. The First edition was 1678. There is no way of knowing the date of publication of this edition but the closest edition listed on Abe claims a date circa 1850, which seems to be applicable to this edition. First Edition thus.
