CARL DUERR ON COMMUNICATION

Carl Duerr frequently practices conventional advisory consulting, reorganizing everything from plant machinery to the top boardroom echelon. But he has made his international reputation for putting ailing companies on the road to stable profitability by putting his money where his mouth is by actually taking over as chief executive and doing the job, then handing the company over to a successor, when it gets to the point where a gentleman can run it. One of his best known successes was his 1968-1970 rescue operation on the UK’s Jensen Motors Ltd. By an adroit blending of professional public relations techniques with his own personal campaign to boost moral and to motivate workers, Duerr gave the firm the kiss of life and a future as well assured as any firm’s could be, as he has stated on resigning as managing director. As chairman, he previously reorganized Europe’s biggest retail jewelry store chain, as managing director, he brought a industrial equipment maker the first profit in its eight years of operation, as owner pro tem, he raised production and sales of a German knitting mill by 600%. He set up vegetable oil refineries for an international firm throughout Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. He is presently a non-executive director on the main board of J. Bibby and Sons, the large UK food, edible oil, and feedstuff group, and a director of their associated firm in Italy.

Carl Duerr has lived in seven countries and has had business experience in more than twenty. He operates now from Munich, but Britain has come to interest him more than any other country. He believes, and minces no words about it, that the UK is on the brink of a magnificent economic break through or of an industrial calamity of frightening magnitude. And he believes that the intelligent use, or neglect, of communication (in the broad, mature, managerial sense of the word) can tip the scale either way. And the time is now.
