Rebound in half leather with the original gilt illustration on cloth tipped onto front board; 4 raised bands, 3 skivers . Acidic discolouration from the leather shows thru the paper boards; slight wear on lower edge; edges of book block are discoloured; very occasional light foxing. Perhaps ads were discarded in the re-bind. Bookplate of J G Bishop on verso of front cover. Folding frontis and 1 map plus 14 wood-cut plates plus 10 woodcut illustrations in text. A handsome volume. Covered in archival plastic. 2 other publishers in USA produced this book in1859, but this is the true First Edition. Ellis, 1794-1871, was sent to Madagascar by the London Missionary Society to investigate the treatment of Christians on the island. The work contains much ethnographic and botanical information and is well illustrated from photographs. The author also includes an account of a stay at the Cape. The book is a classic of historic interest, important in the context of the Slave Trade and Missionary Endeavours. Covered in archival plastic
