Official History

First published in 1924 by the Army General Staff as an official history for South African participation in World War I, this account covers all of the South African campaigns. There are chapters on German South-West Africa, the two phases of the German East African campaign, the South African infantry brigade in Egypt and the South African forces in France. There are also appendices with details on South Africans who won the Victorian Cross and a listing of casualties by unit.

Cloth slightly dull, more so on spine; gold titles on spine and front are bright. Book block is slightly tanned. Erratum slip; portrait of Colonel Mentz as frontis; 230 pages including List of Victoria Crosses; List of Casualties by Unit; plus 15 full page b&w photograph plates; 9 numbered diagrams, i.e. maps with explanatory notes; 18 full page maps in text. No lists of either illustrations or maps. 1000 copies printed. Includes mention of the Rhodesian units, which were part of the Union Defence Forces. Scarce and collectable. Covered in archival plastic.
