R563.00
A SYSTEMATIC MONOGRAPH OF THE GENUS IN SOUTH AFRICA, LESOTHO, SWAZILAND, TRANSKEI, BOTSWANA, NAMIBIA AND ZIMBABWE. ANNALS OF KIRSTENBOSCH BOTANIC GARDENS, VOLUME 14.
FOREWORD
The aims of the National Botanic Gardens are to promote the conservation of and research in connection with southern African Plants. Publication or research results in the form of monographs and longer works, started in 1944 and since then, 13 such works known as Supplementary volumes to the Journal of South African Botany, have been published at regular intervals. In 1984, the Journal of South African Botany amalgamated with the South African Journal of Botany which is produced for the National Botanic Gardens and the South African Association of Botanists. The numbering of volumes followed that of the Journal of South African Botany.
With an increase in the research and educational activities of the National Botanic Gardens the need for publication of longer works increased and it was decided that the title of this new serial publication should be Annals of Kirstenbosch Botanic Gardens. This series will still be devoted to the publication of monographs and major works on southern African flora and the numbering will follow on that of the now defunct supplementary volumes.
This volume reflects all four of the functional areas in which the National Botanic Gardens is involved. In the first place, this is a scientific document which represents a distinct advance in our scientific knowledge. Secondly, it is horticulturally important and it is also very valuable for the plant utilisation function because of the potential economic value of the Moraeas. Lastly, the educational and conservation value of Moraea is important especially because a beautiful plant such as Moraea loubseri is apparently now extinct in nature.
This first volume of Annals of Kirstenbosch Botanic Gardens, has been co-sponsored by the Missouri Botanical Garden … The scientific and artistic value of this first volume is so great that it will be extremely difficult for subsequent volumes to surpass it.
