MY RECOLLECTIONS
After my time in the Navy I returned to a normality in abnormality. Jobs were few and badly paid. I did not have much to look forward to in a country that did not seem to have anything to offer. My brother, Ennio, had always had this dream of going to Africa. We bought an old Fiat 1100 Coloniale with what little money we had saved. During its final service, the Fiat workshop managers said, You would be lucky to even get back home with this thing.
Nonetheless, on September 25 1964 we loaded our car, kissed our brides and kids goodbye, started the motor and headed off on our adventure. It would take us through Calabria, Trapani, Tunisia, Libya, Tripoli, Egypt, Somalia, Kenya, Lake Tanganika and finally, Zambia. It was a trip that would change the course of life as we knew it
