THE FAILURE OF SOUTH AFRICAN EXPANSION 1908-1948

R164.79

Ronald Hyam has written in a most welcome spirit of intellectual calmness. He gives an account of The Failure of South African Expansion, 19o8-1948 that urgently needed to be set down – actually, it is full of guidance, and has become more important because of the critical turn of events in Portugal.

His documentation is good, and his choice of quotations is even better, since the reader is permitted to apply this information to a wider range of South African history. The dream – which was both British and South African – of a great integrated dominion across Southern Africa, has not been realised.

South Africa now confronts the opposite pressures of expansion from forces identified with independent black Africa, and this threatens to become a major theme of unfolding South African history.
