Whatever the reason, the South African Government announced, on 1 August 1950, the intention to place a squadron of the SAAF at the disposal of the United Nations. The challenge of serving in Korea became the responsibility of No 2 Squadron SAAF, known as the Flying Cheetahs, from their Squadron insignia.
