Nambia is essentially a desert country – for the undiscerning a place at best inhospitable; but for all who appreciate the unique, a singular world in every part of its existence – and its future.

Yet man is a very small figure against the sheer scale of the Namibian landscape and the human voice has done little to shatter its silences, for much of it is untouched, its natural forces as yet unexplored. The photographers, Anthony Bannister and Peter Johnson, found their theme in the magnificent spirit of the people and in the natural splendours of this land; while many specialists in various fields collaborated to create a text at once authoritative and fascinating.
