Front lower cnr is bumped; stain where the bookseller’ sticker has fallen off. 200pp., 8 colour plates and black and white chapter heading illustrations by Denys Watkins-Pitchford (1905-1990), the British naturalist, illustrator, writer and children’s author who is also known as ‘BB’. In this book, told as a sequel to his ‘The Little Grey Men’, ‘BB’ writes of the last gnomes left alive in England and their friends the creatures of an English woodland. A ‘Times’ critic wrote of the book: “These are real owls and mice and squirrels and otters in a rear English countryside, though they talk with a human accent.” The book is bound in the original grey boards with gold titling on the spine and a green illustration on the front board. A charming story, beautifully illustrated. Scarce.
