The leather is Slightly rubbed, gold motif on each corner is in fair condition; 5 raised bands on spine with gilt lineations; skiver with title on spine is dull. 2 bookplates and a dealer’s sticker on front paste-down. There is a moderate amount of foxing on the end papers and the verso to the first map in the series. This copy has no title page, which appears to be standard – I imagine because it was included on Vol 1 only. So no definite printing date can be given. The last date in the text is 1853. Mendelssohn, SA Bibliography on page 988 lists the book as “The British Colonies, Division VII and printing date 1851, but he probably took the date from Vol 1. Frontis of Sir Ralph Abercromby, 1734-1801, hero of Aboukir Bay 1801; with tissue guard; 208 pages with tables; 5 double page col maps with vignettes, all unfoxed and very frame-able : Africa; Cape Colony; Natal and Kaffraria; Western Africa; Islands of the Atlantic, with lovely engravings of landscapes by J Rankin, and others.
