Written in 1948, the first version of this play was published in Afrikaans in 1951. Thereafter Krige continued to revise it until a few years ago he rewrote it completely in English. Produced by Pietro Nolte with a distinguished cast, it achieved a succes destime during a limited run in Cape Town and Stellenbosch in 1962.

In March 1963 The Two Lamps received one of the two Rosamund Gilder awards for plays from the continent of Africa.  …

This is the reading not acting version the play. In the actual production scene two of act two was considerably shortened, and the dialogue between Cornelia and Sybrand in both scenes of the last act was also abbreviated.
