THE HOTAZEL YEARS

This book is a personal selection of the best of Obie Oberholzer”s phoographs from 30 years of journeying through southern Africa. Here are the gems that everyone rembers, the classic Obie shots, as well as a numbr of pictures that have never been seen before. In addition, it includes a selection of Obie’s prized black and white photographs, which appear here for the first time and which reveal another side of his art.
The overview of a life spent viewing the world through the lens of his camera tells as much about Obie, photographer, raconteur and free spirit par excellence, as it does of the country and continent he loves. As he has written, I love getting involved in the happy and sad essence of the vast southern Africa lands. There is a haphazard unpredictablty that runs through all these different areas, and travel in these parts requires a developed sense of humour. My pictures are about the somewhat strange, the odd, the trivial and the funny. I love getting myself into storytelling, picture taking, situations. Mostly they come along unintentionally, simply happen along the way, but sometimes one must work at them, coaxing situations into developing and changing.
