OUT OF JAIL
It was only as a prisoner, as a bandiet in a South African jail, that I could begin to realize what life is like for most South Africans, I am white, I had to go inside to know what it’s like to be black.
Bandiet was first published in London in the mid 1970s. Hailed as a classic work of South African prison literature and published in several editions outside the country, it remained banned in South Africa for many years.
Babndiet Out of Jail republishes the full text of the original Bandiet, Seven Years in a South African Prison. In addition, the new text includes stories that were excluded from the original book to avoid causing problems for the author’s colleagues who were still inside. The new book also brings together previously unpublished poems, about prison, about several of his fellow bandiete, and about his experiences with the Truth & Reconciliation Commission. Other new texts include The Rain King, a reflection on returning home to South Africa.
Also include in Bandiet Out of Jail are original prison illustrations by Harold Strachan, twice a fellow bandiet with Lewin in Pretoria. Strachan has done several new drawings specially for this book.
